EASTON, PA - Lafayette rebounded from a four point loss to Villanova with a convincing, 65-54 win over visiting Cornell.
A poor first half offensively by both teams sent them to the lockerroom with Lafayette up 23-22. Both teams shot 7-for-24 (.292) in the first stanza, with the Leopards only advantage on one
extra three-pointer.
The game remained tight until 14 minutes remaining in the second half, when a 31-30 Leopard lead turned into a 15-point lead. Lafayette's 14-0 run was fueled by a Brian Ehlers (Bayshore,
NY/Bayshore) three-pointer from the left wing, and two consecutive Tim Bieg (Haddonfield, NJ/Camden Catholic) steals, which both led to uncontested breakaway layups.
Perhaps the only thing in doubt in the after the run was Ehlers' 44-game double-digit scoring streak. He only had four points at half-time, but a ten point second half ensured the continuance of
the streak.
The Leopards were led in scoring by Tyson Whitfield (Yakima, WA/Eisenhower), who hit four three-pointers en route to a 15 point night. Following closely behind were Ehlers, with 14, and
Bieg, with 13 points, respectively.
