Lafayette Loses Tough One to Towson 57-59

Dec 6, 1999

EASTON, PA - Lafayette's Brian Ehlers' (Bayshore, NY/Bayshore) last second shot perched atop the backboard and wouldn't fall, handing the Leopards their second loss of the season to visiting Towson University, 59-57.

The Leopards held a seven point lead with just under six minutes remaining on a three-pointer by Ehlers, but the Tigers whittled away Lafayette's lead until the game was tied with 1:10 remaining on an athletic up-and-under move by Towson's Shaun Holtz.

After a missed jumper by Tyson Whitfield (Yakima, WA/Eisenhower), Lafayette's offensive answer on the night with a career-high 23 points and 7-for-10 shooting from behind the arc, Towson's Damon Cason drove the length of the floor and tossed up an off-balance shot, which missed badly. The carom came directly to the Tigers' Brian Barber, who layed it in with just six seconds remaining.

Lafayette's two game win streak came to a halt, as did Ehlers' 45-game double-digit scoring streak. He finished with just five points on 2-for-14 shooting. Stefan Ciosici (Timisoara, Romania/C.D. Loga) followed up Whitfield in the scoring with 12 points.

Towson's four-point deficit was erased by nearly 45 percent shooting in the second half, including 16 second half points by Holtz. Barber also contributed heavily, dumping in 17 points.

The loss drops the Leopards to 3-2 on the season, while Towson improves to 4-2.

The Leopards return to action Saturday, Dec. 11, when St. Peter's invades Kirby Sports Center. Game time is set for 3:15 p.m.
