EASTON, Pa. -
Five-goal bursts from Lafayette in the first and third quarters and a seven-point day from Drew Stotler led Lafayette to a 14-8 victory over Lehigh in men's lacrosse action on Wednesday at Metzgar Fields. The Lafayette win over its arch-rival was the first since the 1993 season.
The Leopards outscored Lehigh 5-2 in the opening quarter and set the tone for the game. Junior Kevin Bromby (Ipswich, Mass./Governor Dummer) led off the scoring with an unassisted tally at 11:13. Lehigh tied the game four minutes later, when Doug McKerns hit the back of the net.
Lafayette then scored three straight, with unassisted goals by junior Drew Stotler (Westfield, N,J,/Westfield), freshman Mike Fiorillo (Bayville, N.Y./Locust Valley) and sophomore Ted Blackburn (Sea Cliff, N.Y./North Shore). Lafayette and Lehigh each scored with less than two minutes, but Lafayette's Bromby got the last score of the quarter at :04 to give Lafayette a 5-2 lead.
In the second quarter, Lafayette and Lehigh traded a pair of goals. Stotler and Kevin Angelis (Davidsonville, Md./Arch. Spalding) scored for the Leopards, while Christian Castellani scored his only goal of the game to make it 7-4.
The Leopards cranked out five goals to Lehigh's two in the decisive third quarter. Bromby opened the quarter with his third and final goal of the game at 12:22. Blackburn followed that up with a second Leopard tally at 11:14.
Lehigh's Grant Wasch responded with consecutive goals at 10:23 and 7:38 to close the Lafayette lead to 9-6. The Leopards were not to be denied, however, and scored three straight goals to close out the quarter. Junior Morgan Battle (Princeton, N.J./The Hun School) hit the back of the net for a pair of scores just 17 seconds apart (3:39, 3:22) and freshman Tim Derosier (Long Meadow, Mass./Long Meadow) finished off the scoring with a goal at 1:54 to make it 12- 6.
The Leopards went into a stall in the fourth quarter, allowing just two scores by Lehigh's Osorio at 9:44 and 5:36. Stotler and Angelis each added insurance goals to seal the 14-8 victory for Lafayette. Stotler finished with three goals and four assists to lead Lafayette, while Osorio managed three goals to pace Lehigh.
Junior Duncan Woodard (New Canaan, Conn./St. George's) had nine saves in goal for Lafayette, while his Lehigh counterpart Todd Schreiner managed 12 saves in the loss. Lafayette (5-5) will next travel to Holy Cross for an 11 a.m. faceoff.
