EASTON, Pa. -
Lafayette averted disaster once in overtime, but couldn't do it again, as Sacred Heart's Mike
Robel rifled a high shot past Lafayette goaltender Duncan Woodard (New Canaan, Conn./St.
George's) with just 29 seconds remaining in sudden death overtime.
The Pioneer's Robel scored what appeared to be the game-winner a minute prior to the real
game-winner, but a referee at midfield nullified the goal, calling offsides on Sacred Heart
and giving the ball to Lafayette. After a near score by the Leopards, Sacred Heart quickly
cleared the ball and Robel rifled the ball over Woodard's shoulder.
Sacred Heart took a comfortable lead in the second quarter, up 5-2 in a rain-soaked game.
Both teams had trouble controlling the ball for long periods of time, but Lafayette
managed to string together three straight goals between the second and third quarters to
battle back to a tie. After the Pioneers' scored again with six minutes remaining, things
looked bleak for the Leopards, but Kevin Bromby (Ipswich, Mass./Governor Dummer) beat
his defender with a minute remaining and tucked a shot between Pioneers' goaltender Mike Kelly
's legs to send the game to overtime.
Woodard was the star for Lafayette, making 17 often acrobatic saves, including one from his
knees in the overtime period.
Bromby led the scoring for Lafayette with three goals and an assist.
Morgan Battle (Princeton, N.J./The Hun School) added two goals for the Leopards.
Lafayette moves to 6-6 and returns to action next Saturday against Drexel at Metzgar Fields.
Game time is set for 11 a.m.
