Volleyball Team Downed by Dragons

EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette volleyball team hoped to be the spoiler at the Drexel Tournament this weekend, underestimated yet reinvigorated by the presence of a new head coach and assistant coach after last year's disappointing 1-27 record. However, the Leopards fell in four games to the hosting Dragons Friday, 11-15, 15-11, 2-15, 15-9, in the first match of the two-day Asics Annual Drexel Invitational.

The Leopards rebounded after a close first game to take the second game, 15-11, however the Dragons game out breathing fire in games three and four to close out the match.

Senior middleblocker Melissa Daly (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) notched 11 kills and a .267 attack percentage while classmate Melissa Ommundsen (Northport, N.Y./Northport) had 33 assists and six digs to lead Lafayette. Freshman Caroline Eshman (Maryland/Walter Johnson) made an impressive debut, recording nine kills, seven digs and a team-high .304 attack percentage mark. Senior outside hitter Michelle Calvo (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) added 10 kills and eight digs in the loss.

Nancy Sgagliardich led the Dragon attack with 15 kills and just one error for a .538 attack average, while Gina Campanile was busy adding 53 assists to down the Leopards.

The Leopards look to regroup and work out the kinks before their next match Friday against Loyola. The match is set for 4 p.m.
