PROVIDENCE, R.I. (www.lafayette.edu) - An early goal gave Yale a 1-0 win over Lafayette in the consolation matchup of the Adidas Brown Soccer Classic on Sunday.
Yale took the lead just 7:16 into the game, when Brian Larkin headed a ball through the Lafayette defense, then dribbled in and pushed a shot into the top right corner of the net.
Just one minute later, the Bulldogs nearly padded their lead to two goals, but the Matt Schmidt shot whacked the inside of the post and bounced away.
Lafayette made a last-minute effort to knot the score, getting off several good chances on the Yale goal, but the Bulldogs, who outshot Lafayette 11-4, managed to hang on for the victory.
In the match, Lafayette goalie Craig Schroeder (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) made five saves, while Geoff Tollington stopped two for Yale.
Lafayette is currently 0-3, having lost two previous 1-0, double-overtime decisions. The Leopards return to action on Wednesday when Monmouth comes to Metzgar Fields for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
