Volleyball Team's Luck Unchanged

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Hoping to be reinvigorated by a new coaching staff this season, Lafayette's volleyball team failed to overcome the shadow of its 1-27 record last season as the Leopards fell to La Salle 3-0 (0-15, 6-15, 8-15) in their last match of the Asics 17th Annual Drexel Invitational Saturday. Lafayette's other three losses at the two-day event came at the hands of Drexel, Loyola and Binghamton.

Senior middle blocker Melissa Daly (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) was the highlight of the Leopard team at the tournament and tallied five kills with a .625 hitting percentage against the Explorers. Senior outside hitter and team cocaptain Michelle Calvo (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) had six kills and six digs while fellow cocaptain Melissa Ommundsen (Northport, N.Y./Northport) finished with 17 assists.

La Salle was led to victory by Trina Allen, who recorded 13 kills and a match-high .706 hitting percentage mark. Molly Thatcher contributed 32 assists and Kristin Russo tallied eight kills and seven digs for the Explorers.

Next match for Lafayette: Lafayette faces teams from Long Island, Vermont, Columbia and Maryland universities Sept. 8 and 9 in the LIU/Columbia Fall Classic.
