EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Freshman Jamie Mullarkey (Cramlington, England/Cramlington) made his first collegiate score a memorable one, booting home the game-winner 4:01 into the first overtime session to give Lafayette a 1-0 victory over Philadelphia on Saturday at Metzgar Fields.
The scoring play that gave two-time defending Patriot League champion Lafayette its first win of the season got started when junior Mike Bressan (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) put the ball in for a quick restart. His cross to sophomore Adam Decker (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) allowed Decker to take a shot which hit the cross bar. Mullarkey was there to collect the rebound and put the ball in the lower right corner of the net for the game winner at 94:01.
The game was close throughout with neither team able to secure the momentum. Four minutes into the second half sophomore Paulo Coelho (Whippany, N.J./Whippany) took a free kick serve and headed it wide of the goal. The teams had few legitimate scoring chance for rest of the second half. At 81:30, Lafayette's only corner kick of the half resulted in Philadelphia goalie Scott Nixon deflecting the serve out of the box to neutralize a solid scoring chance.
Philadelphia had an opportunity of its own with three minutes remaining in regulation when it had a direct kick chance from 30 yards out that the Rams could not covert. Lafayette had a similar opportunity at 88:50, but witnessed the same result.
Senior Craig Schroeder (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) was in goal for Lafayette and earned his first shutout of the season with four saves on the day. Philadelphia goalie Nixon recorded two saves.
Lafayette (1-6) opens up a five-game road swing on Tuesday at St. Francis (N.Y.).
