Volleyball Team Drops Patriot League Opener to Black Nights

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette volleyball team fell in its Patriot League opener to Army on Friday, 3-0 (15-7, 15-8, 15-3) at the Allan P. Kirby Sports Center. The Leopards were pumped up through the first two games, responding from the home crowd's energy and pounding back points but they could not overcome the Black Knights' .346 hitting percentage in the match.

Leading the Lafayette attack were a pair of freshmen in Katy Quinn (Manhasset, N.Y./Sacred Heart) and Caroline Eshman (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson), who each notched five kills. The two were starting in the place of sophomore Sarah Deitsch (Norwood, N.J./Old Tappan) and junior Noelle Pepe (Rye, N.Y./Rye) who were out with injuries.

Melissa Ommundsen (Northport, N.Y./Northport) came up big with 15 assists for the Leopards while teammate and co-captain Michelle Calvo (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) was busy on defense, recording 9 digs.

Army (10-4, 1-1) was led offensively by senior Emily Eagan, who registered 10 kills in the match, and junior setter Beth Bellinger, who had 19 assists.

Also missing from the Leopard team on Friday was junior outside hitter Nicole Pepe (Rye, N.Y./Rye). The Pepe twins are expected to return to action on Saturday when Lafayette (1-13, 0-1) hosts another Patriot League foe, Holy Cross, at 7 p.m.
