The Lafayette volleyball team recorded its first victory of the season Friday with a win over Vermont at the LIU/Columbia Fall Classic in Long Island. The Leopards held the Catamounts to a -.029 hitting percentage while registering 39 kills in the win.
Senior outside hitter Michelle Calvo (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) led the way for Lafayette with 19 kills and 17 digs, supported by fellow cocaptain and senior Melissa Ommundsen's (Northport, N.Y./Northport) 34 assists. Junior outside hitter Nicole Pepe (Rye, N.Y./Rye) had 10 digs and a pair of service aces while twin sister Noelle added two kills, four digs and a service ace. Melissa Daly (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) also came up big on defense, adding 11 digs.
The Leopards had 50 digs in the game and held Vermont to 20 kills in Lafayette's second match of the two-day, five-match tournament.
The tournament is taking place on both the Long Island and Columbia campuses, with matches scheduled at both locations on Friday and Saturday.
