EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Despite a hard-fought first game, the Lafayette volleyball team fell to Central Connecticut in straight games, 31-29, 30-12, 30-15 today in Kirby Sports Center.
Lafayette came out firing in the first game led by sophomore Caroline Eshman (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) who knocked down seven of her 12 kills as the Leopards came back to tie the game 17-17. The two teams traded points until Lafayette had game point leading 29-28. The Blue Devils fought back in a series of close points to down the Leopards 31-29.
The loss of the first game kept Lafayette to just five kills in the second game as they fell 30-12 behind 18 Central Connecticut kills.
The third game saw the Leopards fight back to within three to trail 13-10, but the Blue Devils found some offensive rhythm to take the final game 30-15.
Lafayette was led by Eshman with 12 kills and nine digs. Freshman Heidi Olichwier (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) dished out 22 assists and served up five aces for the match.
Central Connecticut improved to 9-12 overall and was led by Shannon Verity with 15 kills followed by freshman Jennifer Cote with 13 kills.
The Leopards (0-20) play host to Patriot League rival Colgate on Friday for a 7:30 match.
