EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - In perhaps its closest match of the year, the Lafayette volleyball team dropped a four-game match to Wagner tonight in Kirby Sports Center. The Leopards fought off a two-game deficit to win the third set but fell in the fourth 34-32 to the Seahawks.
Both teams fought for every point beginning in game one when Lafayette had three opportunities to close out the set, but Wagner hung on to win 31-29. The second game went to the Seahawks 30-25.
In the third set, the Leopards went on an eight-point before clinching the game 30-28. The final stanza saw both teams trade points late in the game before Wagner closed out the match, 34-32.
Lafayette was led by freshman outside hitter Kate Walkenhorst (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall) who was one of three Leopards to post double-doubles on the night with 19 kills and 12 digs. Freshman middle hitter Erin Brune (Pasadena, Calif./Mayfield) was strong at the net posting a career-high 17 kills and 12 digs.
Sophomore Caroline Eshman (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) also had a career-high night tallying 15 kills and 13 digs.
Freshman setter Heidi Olichwier (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) led with a match-high 20 digs. Olichwier also dished out a career-high 46 assists while serving up four service aces.
Wagner was led by Jennine Porter with 18 kills and Kara Wagner with 16 kills and 14 digs. Setter Jessica Vega dished out 42 assists on the night.
Wagner (4-18) will take on St. Peter's on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.
Lafayette (0-24) will try its luck versus Army on Friday at 7 p.m.
