Annapolis, Md. (www.lafayette.edu) - Despite a late offensive surge by a young Leopard squad, the Lafayette volleyball team dropped its match versus Patriot League foe Navy tonight in Annapolis, Md.
Navy came storming out onto the court, scoring 11 of the first 16 points in the first game. Lafayette fought back in the second game to tie the score at 21-21. The Midshipmen got the next three points to lead 24-21 which deemed to be too big a margin for the Leopards as they dropped the second game 30-26.
The final game saw Navy take a 20-12 lead before Lafayette fought back to tie the game at 25-25. The Midshipmen raised their level to close out the match, taking the final game 30-27.
Lafayette was led by freshman Kate Walkenhorst (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall) who recorded 10 kills on the match. Walkenhorst leads the Leopards in kills for the season with 114.
Freshman Lori DeVito (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) was solid in the back row for Lafayette, notching a match-high 12 digs.
Sophomore Caroline Eshman (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) was strong overall, recording eight kills and 10 digs.
Navy was led by Kristin Davidson with 13 kills, Ashley VanHaresvelt with 12 kills and Ashleigh Shear with 17 assists.
The Midshipmen improve to 5-8 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League. Navy hosts Lehigh on Saturday at 7 p.m. Lafayette drops to 0-17 overall and 0-5 in league play and will travel to Washington, D.C. to take on American on Saturday at 7 p.m.
