Lafayette Fencing Opens Season at Johns Hopkins Invitational

BALTIMORE, Md. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette fencing team opened the 2001-02 season at Johns Hopkins University against Virginia, Virginia Tech and William and Mary. The Leopards recorded three losses, but won the sabre against Virginia Tech.

In Lafayette's first match up of the day the Leopards had a tough loss against the University of Virginia coming close in the foil competition (5-4) but losing overall 20-7. Lafayette performed well in the sabre vs. William and Mary (5-4), but lost the match 19-8.

Lafayette took the sabre (7-2) vs. Virginia Tech . Thomas Gaunter (Allentown, Pa./Central Catholic) led the Leopards with three wins. Corey Garner (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) also posted three wins in the sabre competition to aid in the win.

Lafayette (0-3) returns to action on Jan. 27. The Leopards travel to Haverford where they will face Yeshiva University, Haverford College and Hunter College.
