EASTON, Pa (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette's fencing team lost three tough competitions last weekend to opponents St. John's College-Annapolis, Army, and Cornell in a meet held at Kirby Sports Center.
In the first match up of the day the Leopards lost a close meet to St. John's College 14-13. Lafayette won both the sabre(6-3) and the foil(5-4) competitions, but St. John's posted a commanding 7-2 win in the epee competition to capture the overall victory.
The Leopards struggled in their second meet against Army, winning only one bout of the competition and posting a 26-1 loss. In their third match up agianst Cornell the Leopards captured the sabre competition 5-4 behind Tom Gauntner's (Allentown, PA/Central Catholic) three wins, but could not defeat Cornell in the foil or the epee where they lost 8-1 and 9-0 respectively. The final score was 21-6 in favor of Cornell.
Lafayette was led by Corey Garner (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) who collected four wins for the day in the sabre, and Mike McFadden (Landsdowne, DE/Monstgnor) who posted three victories in the foil.
In the third matchup of the day Army earned a 21-6 victory over St. John's College. The Leopards return to action on Sunday February 18, when they take on Drew University, New Jersey Tech, Stevens Tech, and Johns Hopkins University in a meet being held at Drew University.
