Softball Swept By Holy Cross

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette softball team opened its Patriot League slate by hosting Holy Cross in a tripleheader but was swept by the Crusaders, 8-3, 3-2, and 5-1.

In game one Lafayette (3-16, 0-3 PL) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, started by a walk by Mara Shainheit (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) and a sacrifice bunt by Laura Schrager (Montclair, N.J./Montclair-Kimberly Academy). Becky Chmielowski (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) singled to centerfield, advancing Shainheit to third with Kelly Wise (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) up next at the plate. Wise singled to the shortstop, knocking in Shainheit and advancing Chmielowski to third.

Becky Foley hit into a fielder's choice for the second out but was able to bring Chmielowski in for the 2-0 score. Liz Lucisano (Levittown, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) popped out to end the inning.

The Leopards added to their lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Wise, which scored Shainheit who had singled to start the inning.

Holy Cross (7-6, 3-0 PL) scored all eight of its runs in the fourth inning, starting with a single by Jamie Olenoski and an error on the Leopards to advance the next batter to first and push Olenoski to third. Tiffany DeCoff drove in Olenoski on a fielder's choice to spark the eight-run rally. Julie Sees knocked in two runs with a single to right field and Lizz Curll recorded an RBI on an error by Lafayette. Olenoski recorded an RBI of her own later in the inning and Shelley Richard drove in two runs with a single to center field for the final 8-3 margin of victory.

Freshman Amy Magos (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) picked up the loss on the mound, allowing eight runs on nine hits and walking five. Nicole Vitti picked up a win allowing three runs on six hits and striking out two.

In the second game, Lafayette again jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Chmielowski doubled to centerfield, advancing Schrager who had been hit by a pitch. Wise doubled to left center, knocking in both Schrager and Chmielowski for the lead.

The Crusaders, however, came back to tie it in the second, getting two RBI on a triple from Melisa Beshire with two outs. The team scored the final run of the game in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Chris Palmeri.

Freshman Mollie Moschberger (Fairhaven, N.J./Rumson-Fairfhaven) allowed three runs on six hits while striking out two. Holy Cross' Kaitlyn Hannen recorded the win allowing two hits on five hits.

In the final game of the afternoon, Holy Cross jumped onto the scoreboard first with four runs in the first inning. Two wild pitches scored the team's first two runs of the game while DeCoff drove in a run for a 3-0 lead. The last run came from a Bershire single that scored Olenoski for the 4-0 advantage.

The Crusaders added a run in the top of the fifth by Olenoski, who walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and stole home. But the Leopards answered back in the bottom of the fifth started by a double to leftfield by Stacy Brewer (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore), who advanced to third on a wild throw. Erin Allison (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) grounded out to shortstop but picked up the RBI to end the game's scoring for the 5-1 final.

Danielle Fecso (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) gave up five runs on six hits while Megan Manner got the win allowing one run on six hits.

Chmielowki was 4-for-9 on the day with a double and a stolen base and Wise was 3-for-10 with a double and four RBI. Becky Foley (Jamison, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie), Brewer and Allison each recorded doubles on the afternoon.

The Leopards wrap up their series with the Crusaders on Sunday at noon.
