EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette looked to avenge its three loss day to Holy Cross on Saturday with a win over the Crusaders on Sunday but came up short, 4-3, in eight innings at Metzgar Fields.
The Leopards (3-17, 0-4 PL) jumped out to the lead first for the third time against the Crusaders in this contest with a three-run first inning. Sophomore Mara Shainheit (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) started the inning with a groundout but was followed by Laura Schrager (Montclair, N.J./Montclair-Kimberley Academy) who was walked by pitcher Christine Palmeri. Schrager advanced on a wild pitch and Becky Chmielowski (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) took first base on balls.
Senior Kelly Wise (Whitestone N.Y./St. Francis Prep) doubled to center field, driving in Schrager and Chmielowski for a 2-0 lead. Becky Foley (Jamison, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) singled to centerfield, scoring Wise for the 3-0 advantage. Liz Lucisano (Levittown, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) struck out in the next at bat but Liz Siliato (San Francisco, Calif./Andover) reached base on an error. Silato and Foley each advanced a base on a wild throw before Stacy Brewer (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) popped up to end the inning.
Holy Cross (8-6, 4-0 PL) rallied in the fourth inning, starting with a single by Julie Sees to center field. Jamie Olenoski bunted for a single to advance Sees to second. Shelley Richard reached on a fielder's choice but advanced Olenoski to third. Richard stole second and Palmeri reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Richard to third as Olenoski was out at the plate. Caitlyn McCarthy tripled to center field and scored on the throw, knotting the game at 3-3.
The teams remained scoreless through the next three innings, pushing the game to extra innings. The Crusaders took advantage as Richard walked, Olenoski doubled and McCarthy walked to load the bases. The Leopards' third pitcher of the game, Molly Moschberger (Fairhaven, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven), walked the next batter, which turned out to be the winning run.
The Leopards attempted a comeback in the bottom of the eighth with two outs when Chmielowski walked and Wise singled to the shortstop. But it was not to be as Foley flied out to right field to end the game.
Palmeri pitched a three-hitter for Holy Cross, allowing three runs, walking three and striking out two.
Lafayette's starter, Kathy Vassos (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine), pitched four innings, allowing six hits and three runs. B>Amy Magos (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) pitched two innings and Moschberger accounted for the last two and the loss.
Wise was 2-for-4 on the game with two RBI while McCarthy accounted for three RBI, going 1-for 2 for the Crusaders.
The Leopards return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader at Rider.
