Softball Blanked By Villanova In Doubleheader

VILLANOVA, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette softball team struggled in its doubleheader against Villanova, dropping both games (7-0, 3-0) in the non-conference matchup on Tuesday.

The Wildcats (25-3) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the first game when a double by Heather Garboden drove in Jackie Pasquerella, who had singled to start the inning. The team built on its lead in the fourth, getting a run off a Lafayette error.

Ricci Lugo started the fifth inning singling to left field and stealing second base. Singles by Garboden Sara Carlson loaded the bases for Gina DeFrancesco who singled and advanced to second on a wild throw, bringing in two runs. Maren Niwinski doubled to left to bring in two more runs for the 6-0 lead.

After Niwisnski advanced to third on a wild pitch, Josey Mikulyuk singled to drive in the last run of the game.

Mara Shainheit (Mt. Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley ) went 2-for-3 with a double for Lafayette while Becky Chmielowski (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) went 1-for-3 with a double.

Kari Singley earned the win for the Wildcats, pitching a three-hitter and striking out nine.

Freshman pitcher Amy Magos (Califon, N.J./Voorhees ) (1-8) picked up the loss for Lafayette.

In game two, Villanova jumped out to a 1-0 lead again in the first, started by a bunt single by Robin Flier, who then stole second base. A sacrifice groundout by Pasquerella advanced Flier to third, who was then brought home by a Garboden single to left center field.

The Wildcats added to their lead in the bottom of the third when Lugo singled to center field to bring in Pasquerella for the 2-0 lead. Scoring wrapped up in the bottom of the fifth when Pasquerella scored on an error by Leigh Minarick (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley).

Freshman Mollie Moschberger (Fairhaven, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven) allowed just three runs on six hits while striking out one in the loss.

Keri Stoller pitched six innings, giving up one hit to Kelly Wise (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) and striking out 13 in the shutout.

Lafayette falls to 4-24 heading into its conference doubleheaders against Army on Friday and Saturday at Metzgar Fields.
