The Lafayette men's golf team finished 23rd in the 29-team field at the 2001 George Washington University Invitational at Swan Point Yacht and Country Club. The Leopards shot 343 in the first round and 350 in the second for a two-day total of 693 on the 6,761-yard, par 72 course.
Leading the Leopards was senior co-captain Andrew Mitchell with an 86-86--172 to tie for 103rd place. Frank Fazzinga '01, the other Lafayette co-captain, was the next Leopard on the leader board with an 85-90--175 to tie for 109th place.
McNeese State University edged out host George Washington for the team title with a team score of 305-311--616. Also finishing in a tie for second place was Lehigh, which matched the hosts with a team score of 624.
Three Lafayette freshmen competed in the tournament, as Jonathan Cohn finished tied for 111th place with a 91-85--176, and both Joel Goldberg and Derek Downing ended up in a tie for 117th place. Goldberg carded an 83-95--178, while Downing fired an 89-89--178.
Lafayette returns to action this Friday at the Moravian Invitational, and then travels to the Hofstra Invitational on Sunday.
