Lafayette Softball Drops Two To Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette softball team was able to take Patriot League leading Lehigh to 12 innings in the first game of the doubleheader before falling, 6-5. The Leopards dropped the nightcap, 6-2, to its archrival.

Lehigh (29-11, 16-2 PL) opened the scoring in the first game in the bottom of the third with three runs off RBIs from Stephanie Digneo, who tripled, Elizabeth Gripp and Stephanie Howell.

Lafayette (8-31, 4-14 PL) was scoreless until the top of the seventh when it scored four runs for a 4-3 lead off RBI singles from Becky Chmielowski (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) and Liz Silato (2) (San Francisco, Calif./Andover Academy) and a sacrifice fly by Kelly Wise (Whitestone, N.Y./St. Francis Prep). T

The Mountain Hawks answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh with a RBI from Chris Duncan to send it into extra innings.

In the top of the eight, Lafayette took a 5-4 lead when a fielder's choice bunt by Laura Schrager (Montclair, N.J./Montclair-Kimberly Acad.) drove in Leigh Minarick (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley).

It didn't last long as Lehigh scored in the bottom of the eighth on a RBI triple by Bonnie Hoffman to knot the contest again.

Both teams went scoreless until the bottom of the 12th when Hoffman singled to drive in Davon Ortega for the winning run.

In the nightcap, Lafayette opened the scoring in the first as Chmielowski scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead. Lehigh came right back in the bottom of the first with a two RBI single up the middle for a 2-1 lead.

Lehigh scored again in the bottom of the second when Edoho Awaih tripled and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Kelly Glaser.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the Mountain Hawks scored two more runs on singles by Gripp and Duncan for the 5-1 advantage.

The Leopards managed one more run in the top of the sixth when Chmielowski scored on a sacrfice fly to rightfield by Becky Foley (Jamison, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie). Lehigh sealed the game on a Digneo RBI single in the bottom of the inning.
