EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The 2001 Lafayette football preseason camp officially got under way today at the College's Metzgar Fields as 24 freshmen two weeks of two-a-day sessions with a pair of practices in humid 87-degree weather.
Lafayette football's Class of 2005 arrived on College Hill yesterday and went through physicals and run testing this morning. The Leopards' upperclassmen report to campus tomorrow and the entire squad will practice together for the first time on Thursday.
"We're really excited about this class because it is the first group we had an opportunity to take a full year's worth of recruiting and evaluation," said second-year Leopard head coach Frank Tavani. "We think it is a very talented group. We are very pleased with the speed and conditioning testing that was done. Some of these guys have come in and showed tremendous strength levels."
A number of upperclassmen were removed from Lafayette's preseason roster, most notably senior defensive back Kenya Allen. The two-time District II Academic All-American and 2000 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar First Team honoree, Allen suffered a career-ending concussion in the Leopards' contest at Columbia. A psychology major, Allen has committed himself to helping the Lafayette football program as a student assistant coach for the 2001 season.
Lafayette continues preseason practice until classes begin on Monday, Aug. 27. The Leopards open the 2001 season when they travel to Towson for a Patriot League contest on Sept. 8, at 1 p.m.
