EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Second-year Lafayette head football coach Frank Tavani focused on the defense at the Leopards' 2001 Football Media Day held today in the College's Allan P. Kirby Sports Center.

"I look for our defense to carry this football team, simply because of the numbers in leadership on that side of the ball," said Tavani. "They have really been working hard in practice. I also think the offense is starting to catch on right now."

Several members of the local media attended the event, which featured a punt, pass and kick contest for the media after the interview sessions. Despite being the elderstatesman in the contest, Gary Laubach of the Lafayette Sports Network and RCN took first place behind a perfect three-for-three performance on field goals. Service Electic's Mike Hodrick finished second, while The Express-Times' Nick Fierro took home a third-place finish.

The Leopards continue two-a-day workouts until classes begin on Monday, Aug. 27. The Leopards open the 2001 season when they travel to Towson for a Patriot League contest on Sept. 8, at 1 p.m.
