PHILADELPHIA (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's volleyball team finished up day one at the La Salle Tournament on a sour note as they fell to the University of Maryland - Baltimore County today, 3-0. Individual game scores reflected a young Leopard squad who are learning to work as a team as they fell 30-23, 30-17, and 30-15 to a more experienced UMBC team.
The Leopard's freshman class led the squad for the second straight game as Erin Brune (Pasadena, Calif./Mayfield) notched a team-high six kills and five digs, while classmate Lori DeVito (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) served up four aces.
Freshman defensive specialist Heidi Olichwier (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) set up her teammates with 10 assists while registering her own three kills and six digs. Outside hitter Katherine Walkenhorst (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall) also put in a strong effort in the match with two kills and five digs.
The Retrievers were led by Jennifer Davis who downed the Leopards with 13 kills and nine digs while teammate Heather Kerley registered 24 assists for the match.
UMBC improved their record to 2-0 heading into the second day of the tournament when they square off with Drexel at 2:00 p.m.
Lafayette (0-2) looks to earn their first win when they meet Morgan State at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning to kick off day two of the La Salle Tournament in Philadelphia.
