EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette College football team has named seniors Jim Brown (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and Barret Diefenderfer (Great Falls, Va./The Landon School) its 2001 team captains as selected by their teammates.
"I think they are both outstanding selections," said first-year Leopards' head coach Frank Tavani. "They both epitomize what the program is about - blue collar guys who have completely dedicated themselves to Lafayette football. They are two very strong leaders who will do an excellent job as captains."
A History major who was a member of the 2000 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, Brown has been a key member of the Leopards' defensive line rotation the past two seasons but moved to the offensive line during the 2001 preseason because of injuries. Currently slated as the starting left guard for the Leopards' season opener, Brown started seven contests over the past two seasons at defensive tackle and recorded 35 total tackles and one fumble recovery,
A Government and Law major, Diefenderfer started all 11 contests last season at nose tackle and led the Patriot League with three fumble recoveries. He finished 15th on the squad with 22 tackles, while also recording one sack and three pass break-ups. In his career, Diefenderfer has tallied 33 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, four sacks and three fumble recoveries.
Lafayette opens its 120th season when they travel to Towson for a Patriot League contest on Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. The Leopards' 2001 schedule features five home contests, including Ivy League foes Pennsylvania and Columbia, as well as Patriot League rivals Bucknell, Colgate and Fordham.
