LEWISBURG, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Despite a strong effort in the final game, the Lafayette Volleyball team dropped its Patriot League opener to Bucknell 3-0 tonight in Lewisburg, Pa.
Lafayette is searching for the right mix as it falls to 0-9 on the season while Bucknell snapped a three-match losing streak. The Leopards fell to the Bison in straight games: 30-17, 30-15, 30-22.
The Leopards were led by freshman outside hitter Kate Walkenhorst (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall) and middle hitter Erin Brune (Pasadena, Calif./Mayfield) who each tallied five kills.
Senior co-captain Nicole Pepe (Rye, N.Y./Rye) led the squad defensively with six digs while Walkenhorst notched five for the match.
For the seventh time in the last nine games, freshman setter Heidi Olichwier (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) reached double digits in the assists column, recording 11 versus the Bison.
Bucknell was led by Shannon Walker, who tallied a match-high 14 kills, and Whitney Williams who recorded 27 assists in the win.
The Bison improved to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the Patriot League. Bucknell returns to the court on Sept. 22 when they host Lehigh at 7 p.m.
Lafayette (0-9, 0-1) travels to Hamilton, N.Y. for its second league game versus Colgate at 11:00 a.m.
