EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Leopard volleyball team came out firing versus league foe Holy Cross tonight but fell to the Crusaders in straight games, 3-0. Lafayette played in its second straight home match and is still seeking its first win as they dropped 30-28, 30-19 and 30-16 to Holy Cross.
Freshman outside hitter Kate Walkenhorst (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall) led Lafayette with a match-high 11 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Caroline Eshman (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) was close behind with seven kills and six digs.
Freshman setter Heidi Olichwier (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) is becoming one of the most consistent performers for Lafayette as she led both teams with 22 assists for the match.
Junior co-captain Sarah Deitsch (Forwood, N.J./Old Tappan) and freshman Lori DeVito (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) were solid in the back row for the Leopards having recorded eight digs each.
Lafayette edged out Holy Cross in total team blocks with five while the Crusaders notched 4.5 on the match. Holy Cross held the advantage in kills with 53 versus Lafayette's 33.
The Crusaders were led by Katie Mulvihill with 10 kills, Michelle Leahy and Kerri Blumenauer with 10 digs, and Carissa Bennett with four service aces.
Holy Cross improved to 9-3 and 1-2 in league play and will return to the court tomorrow night when they travel to Bethlehem to take on Lehigh at 7:00 p.m.
Lafayette falls to 0-12 overall and 0-3 in the Patriot League and will face-off with Army tomorrow night. The match is set for 7:00 p.m. at Kirby Sports Center.
