PHILADELPHIA (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette volleyball team picked up its first two games of the season but failed to clinch the closer as they fell to Drexel in five games tonight in Philadelphia. The contest was part of the rescheduled Drexel Tournament originally dated for Sept. 14-15.
The Leopards came out firing and won the first two games 30-27, 30-27. Drexel picked up the pace and won the third and fourth games decisively 30-21, 30-19. Lafayette ran out of steam as they dropped the final game 15-7.
The Dragons were led by Angela Tassone who shot for a match-high 29 kills and a team-high 16 digs. Drexel's Gina Campanile kept her team in the match by dishing out 58 assists.
Kate Walkenhorst (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall) was an overall force for Lafayette as she picked up a career-high 21 kills and a match-high 17 digs.
Freshman Erin Brune (Pasadena, Calif./Mayfield) notched 12 kills and picked up 13 digs while sophomore Caroline Eshman (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) knocked down 12 kills of her own.
Setter Heidi Olichwier (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) dished out 44 assists in the match, bringing her season total to 236.
The Dragons (7-7) return to the court on Tuesday when they travel to Towson for a 7:00 match.
Lafayette (0-15, 0-4) looks for its first win of the season when they host Rider on Wednesday at 7:00.
