EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette had the Patriot League's top team on the ropes in game two, but could not close the deal as they fell to American University 3-0 (30-13, 30-23 and 30-17) on Saturday night at Kirby Sports Center.
Already down a game, the Leopards' charged out to a 20-17 lead in game two on the strength of sophomore Kate Walkenhorst's (Tulsa, Okl./Cascia Hall) three timely kills. However, Lafayette could not take advantage of the momentum and the visiting Eagles came back by feeding Cutrina Biddulph and reigning conference player of the week Karla Kucerkova.
Kucerkova finished with a team-high 13 kills, and Biddulph added 12 for American.
After the game two let down, the Leopards took a brief game three lead, but watched it slip away.
Erin Brune (Pasadena, Calif./Mayfield) and Walkenhorst each finished with six kills, and Lori DeVito (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) turned in eight assists for Lafayette.
Lafayette prepares to host archrival Lehigh on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
