Lafayette Fencing Defeats Virginia in Four-Team Competition

BALTIMORE, Md. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette fencing team defeated Virginia, 16-11, but then dropped matches to William and Mary, 21-6 and Virginia Tech, 14-13 on Sunday afternoon at Johns Hopkins.

Against Virginia, the Leopards posted a 6-3 win in the foil and a 6-3 victory in the sabre, with the Cavaliers holding a 4-5 advantage in the epee.

The match with Virginia Tech came down to only a point, with the Leopards winning the foil (7-2) and sabre (5-4), but the Hokies claimed the epee (8-1).

Individually for the Leopards, Tom Gauntner turned in a 7-2 performance with the sabre, while Andrew Thomas was 6-3 in the same event. Maureen Auro finished with a 5-4 mark in the foil and Ardin Marchetta posted a 2-1 record in the foil.

Lafayette (1-2) does not compete again until Jan. 26 at Haverford College against Haverford, Hunter and Yeshiva.
