The Lafayette fencing team matched up against Haverford College, Hunter College and Yeshiva University in a tri on Jan. 27 at Haverford. The Leopards were victorious in competition agianst Hunter, but came up on the short end of the score against both Haverford and Yeshiva.
Lafayette took the sabre (7-2) vs. Haverford. Corey Garner (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) and Tom Gauntner (Allentown, Pa/Central Catholic) each recorded three wins to lead the Leopards. However, Haverford out matched Lafayette in the foil (6-3) and the epee (8-1) competition and won the overall competition 16-11.
The Leopards put up a strong fight against Yeshiva. Lafayette had victories in both the foil (7-2) and the sabre (6-3) competitions. Mike McFadden (Lansdowne, Del./Monsignor Bonner) posted three victories in the foil and Gaunter added three more in the sabre. Yeshiva won the overall match, 14-13, with a 9-0 shutout in the epee.
In a tight battle against Hunter, the Leopards took the foil (6-3), but lost in both the sabre (5-4) and the epee (5-4). The Leopards held on for the overall victory,14-13. McFadden helped his team with three victories in foil competition.
