Leopards Finish 12th At 2002 Lafayette Golf Invitational

LOPATCONG, N.J. (www.lafayette.edu) - Three Lafayette golfers recorded scores in the 70s during the second and final round of the 2002 Lafayette Invitational at The Architects Golf Club. The Leopards finished 12th overall with a team score of 316-305--621 and were led today by freshman Jeremiah O'Neill with a one-under 70 to tie for ninth place in the individual race.

Duquesne captured the team title on the beautiful par-71, 6,863-yard championship course with a score of 292-298--590, three strokes ahead of St. Joseph's and seven strokes better than Bucknell. Maryland-Baltimore County finished fourth at 15 strokes off while Delaware rounded out the top five with a finish that was 17 strokes back.

St. Joseph's Paul Polinsky earned medalist honors, recording the best round of the tournament with a two-under 69 to finish one under in the tournament. Polinsky was one of seven golfers one stroke out of the lead after round one and finished three strokes ahead of both Jeffrey Michner of Drexel and Mike Namey of Duquesne.

Sophomore Brad Rock, who led Lafayette in round one with a 75, fired a 79 today to finish in a tie for 36th at 154. Freshman Josh Shepard ended up one stoke behind Rock with a 79-76--155. Other qualifying Lafayette scores included a pair of freshmen in Sean McMonagle, who finished 74th with an 82-85--167, and Peter Jeffe, who ended up in a tie for 75th at 88-80--168.

The Leopards' next competition is the Patriot League Championships at Army on April 19-21.
