EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette football team officially opened its 2002 preseason camp this morning with 35 freshmen practicing in 90-degree heat at Metzgar Fields. Today marks the first day of a two-week stretch featuring two-a-day practices.

After undergoing running and strength testing Sunday evening, the new Leopards hit the field for the first time, working out in shorts and helmets.

"Our depth is a nice thing in that we've got a full team, and are able to go 11-on-11 the first day and get the kids acclimated to the work ethic," said head coach Frank Tavani. "We saw some good things at the skill positions. The three quarterbacks all threw the ball extremely well and I thought our receiving corps looked good. We've got some size and some speed in there."

There was one roster move, with two players switching sides of the ball. Bob Szuhany moved from defensive line to offensive line and Kwame Lovell changed from offensive to defensive line.

The upperclassmen will report to campus Tuesday and the full team will practice together for the first time on Thursday.

Preseason camp continues until Aug. 26 when classes begin. The Leopards open the 2002 season Sept. 7 when they host Monmouth at 1 p.m. at Fisher Field.

ROSTER UPDATE:
Kwame Lovell (Fr., OL) - moved to defensive line and will wear number 91.
Bob Szuhany (Fr., DL) - moved to offensive line and will wear number 73.
