EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette football team avoided the high temperatures and humidity today with pre-scheduled speed and strength testing for the upperclassmen and academic seminars for the freshmen.

The Leopards' strength program was bolstered by having a record 50 members of the program work out on campus during this past summer. The results were impressive as 18 Leopards hang cleaned over 300 pounds and several recorded personal bests.

The speed testing was highlighted by split end Jeremy Burkes '04, who recorded at time of 4.37 in the 40-yard run. Other notables included tailback Joe McCourt '05, who added 20 pounds of muscle and cut his time in the 40 by .15 seconds, and wide receiver John Weyrauch '04, who added 10 pounds and bettered his 40 time by .26 seconds.

The full squad will practice together for the first time on Thursday, with practices scheduled for 8:15 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. Practices will be held in helmets, jerseys, and shorts on Thursday, add in shoulder pads on Friday and Saturday and begin with full-equipment workouts on Sunday.

Preseason camp continues until Aug. 26 when classes begin. The Leopards open the 2002 season Sept. 7 when they host Monmouth at 1 p.m. at Fisher Field.
