EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Sixty-one upperclassmen joined the 35 freshmen in the first day of full squad practice for the Lafayette football team. After a record 50 Leopards spent the summer working out on campus, they were excited to get onto the field.
The team practiced at Metzgar Fields in the 90-degree heat in the first of a seven-day stretch of two-a-day sessions. The Leopards practiced in jerseys, shorts and helmets and will not wear full pads until Sunday.
The special teams worked out for the first time in preseason this morning. Day four also gave the skill players a chance to fine-tune their abilities, while the linemen went through separate blocking drills. The Leopards then spent the last half hour of the morning session going 11-on-11.
The Leopards will practice again this afternoon and wrap up day four with positional and team meetings this evening.
Preseason camp continues until Aug. 26 when classes begin. The Leopards open the 2002 season Sept. 7 when they host Monmouth at 1 p.m. at Fisher Field.
