BALTIMORE, Md. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette junior Maria Kinzel's (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) eight kill, 14 dig performance led the Leopards, but it was not enough to carry them past host University of Maryland Baltimore County in the first round of the UMBC Tournament Friday night.
The Leopards' lost the match in three games, 30-23, 30-13 and 30-21, dropping the team to 0-7 on the season.
Sophomore Heidi Olichwier (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) performed admirably, recording 17 assists and two service aces, but the formidable Retrievers from UMBC proved too much.
Three Retrievers finished with double-digit kills, and Heather Hollidge and Megan Gross tallied 21 and 17 assists respectively.
The Leopards square off against Coppin State and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday.
