NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette volleyball team won the third set of their match against Iona Wednesday night at the Mulcahy Center, but lost the match in four games (30-13, 30-10, 32-34, 30-19). The loss dropped the Leopards to 0-3 on the young season, but the team's first set win of the year is evidence of improvement.
After dropping the first two sets by a convincing margin, Lafayette rallied and cut the Gaels lead to 2-1. The Leopards won the fourth set on the strength of 10 kills, the most recorded in any set by the Leopards all season.
Sophomore Heidi Olichwier (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) paced the Leopards, registering 17 assists, 10 digs and 8 service aces. Junior Maria Kinzel (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) added seven kills.
The Gaels (1-3) got an outstanding performance by Sophomore Ana Brozva. Brozva tallied 41 assists and 13 service aces.
The Leopards return to action on Friday, September 6 against Wofford in the Rider Classic hosted by Rider University.
