EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette opened its season with a thrilling, come-from-behind 30-29 victory over Monmouth. Senior Martin Brecht kicked a 22-yard go-ahead field goal that was negated by a holding call. Brecht stepped back 10 yards and then drilled the 32-yard game-winner with 1:11 remaining in the game.
The Lafayette (1-0) defense then held Monmouth (0-1) on the ensuing drive, forcing a 45-yard FG attempt that Ryan Peterson sent wide left.
Brecht also connected on 22 and 41-yard field goals in the game and was three-for-three on PAT attempts. This is the second game-winning field goal of his career.
This is the first time the Leopards have won their season opener since 1996 when they beat Millersville, 29-17.
Lafayette rallied from a 16-point second-quarter deficit by scoring 17 points in just 4:26. Tailback Joe McCourt scored on a six-yard run and quarterback Marko Glavic found John Weyrauch in the right corner of the end zone for a 37-yard touchdown.
The Leopards outgained the Hawks in total offense, 465-337, as Glavic completed 22-of-33 passes for 297 yards and one touchdown. McCourt finished the day with 30 carries for 152 yards and two touchdowns, while Weyrauch tied the school record and matched his career-high with 11 catches for 142 yards and a score.
Lafayette returns to action Sept. 14 when Patriot League foe Towson visits Fisher Field for a 1 p.m. game.
