Lafayette Football Begins Second Week of Preseason Camp

Aug. 18, 2003

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette football team practiced twice at Metzgar Fields on Monday to open the second week of preseason camp.

Monday marked the Leopards' first two-a-day session. Saturday's scheduled double session was limited to one practice due to lightning.

The Leopards' practice schedule will change slightly later this week as classes near and the incoming freshmen go through orientation. Wednesday's double session will have the entire team in full pads. On Thursday, the freshmen will practice at 6:30 a.m., while the upperclassmen will hit the field at 3:00 p.m. The entire team will suit up for practice Friday at 6:30 a.m., while the upperclassmen return to the field at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Saturday's schedule is the same as Thursday's, with a pair of full-squad practices slated for Sunday.

"It's good for the younger guys because they get to make up some of the practices they didn't get since they couldn't report earlier this year," said fourth-year head coach Frank Tavani.

The final results of the Leopards' strength testing boast some impressive numbers.

Senior defensive back Anthony Hawthorne (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) squatted a team-best 577 pounds. Sophomore linebacker Stephen McFarlane (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) and junior linebacker John-Frank Stubits (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) both posted totals of 561 pounds.

A pair of freshmen posted the top two bench press totals. Offensive lineman Ryan Nase (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge/Peddie) lifted 391 pounds, while cornerback Trey Martell (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) put up 385 pounds. Junior offensive lineman Michael Lewandos (Walpole, Mass./Walpole/Blair Academy) also lifted 385 pounds.

Sophomore fullback David Nelson (Dover, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) put up 380 pounds in the hang clean, while senior defensive lineman Casey McKeen (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) posted a total of 357 pounds.

Freshman tailback Chris Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) posted a vertical jump of 38 inches, while senior receiver John Weyrauch (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) jumped 36 inches.

Lafayette opens the 2003 season at home against Marist on Sept. 6. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Fisher Field.
