MERCER COUNTY, N.J. - Runner-up finishes by sophomore Brett Warren (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and freshman Andrew Mott (Corpus Christi, Texas/Mary Carroll) at first and second singles, respectively, led Lafayette to a second-place finish at the 2003 ECAC Men's Tennis Open South Championship on Sunday.
Lafayette earned 14 team points, while Manhattan tallied 18.5 team points to win the championship.
Warren earned a first-round bye at first singles, then defeated St. Peters' Cprime Realista, 6-3, 6-1. Warren won 6-4, 6-2 over Concordia's Cristiano Borelli in the third round before falling, 7-5, 6-1 to Manhattan's Erez Cohen in the championship match.
Mott also earned a first-round bye at second singles. He rallied to defeat Manhattan's Zoltan Bus in the second round, 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4, then cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Bucknell's Asher Salam in the third round. Mott fell in the championship to Dowling's Tamas Unguari, 7-6, 7-6.
Junior John Zazzu (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) and sophomore Craig Helstowski (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John) won first-round matches at third and fourth singles, respectively, before falling in the second round.
Senior Devin Murphy (Buxton, Md./Boys Latin School) and sophomore Peter Titus (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) teamed to win a first-round doubles match before bowing out in the second round.
The Leopards return to action on Tuesday, visiting Monmouth for a 3:30 p.m. match.
