LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (www.lafayette.edu) - Despite a number of fine individual performances, the Lafayette volleyball team fell in four games to Rider in non-conference action on Wednesday night.
Sophomore Veronica Canto-Ponce registered 20 kills, her fourth match with 20 or more kills this season, and recorded 10 digs to lead the Leopards. Canto-Ponce, who ranks third in the Patriot League and 22nd in the country with 0.63 aces per game, had two aces to give her 100 in her career.
Lafayette (9-6, 2-1 PL) had 19 kills and just two errors in a 30-24 third game win to push the match to a fourth game, but was unable to force a deciding set as Rider improved to 9-8.
Freshman Maura Kelly replaced injured middle blocker Shannon Fisher in the starting lineup and responded with 10 kills and a .308 attack percentage, as well as a pair of solo blocks. Fellow freshman Lauren Dalsky set a career-high with 26 digs.
With Fisher sidelined, Lafayette shuffled its lineup and played with several combinations of players. Heidi Olichwier and Katie Moore shared setting duties with 21 and 19 assists, respectively. Olichwier had 12 digs while Moore posted 11.
Rider, which won its games by the scores of 30-21, 30-21, and 30-24 in the fourth, was led by 15 kills from Stefanie Lombardo and 11 kills on 20 attacks by Katrina Stehle. Jaclyn Levi had 21 digs while Jennifer Lane recorded 43 assists as the Broncs hit .265 in the match.
Lafayette will return to Patriot League action this weekend as the squad travels to West Point, N.Y. and Worcester, Mass. for matches with Army on Friday and Holy Cross on Saturday.
