WORCESTER, Mass. (www.lafayette.edu) - Holy Cross won its second match of the weekend on Saturday afternoon in Worcester, Mass. as the Crusaders downed Lafayette in four games.
The win gives Holy Cross a 2-3 record in Patriot League play, while the Leopards are also 2-3 after this weekend's road swing.
Holy Cross claimed the first game, 30-26, before Lafayette won game two 30-27. After a 30-22 decision in game three, the fourth set was the cleanest of the night as the squads combined for a .310 attack percentage, and the Crusaders' 21 kills gave them a 30-24 victory.
Holy Cross (3-14 overall) turned to Caitlin Agostinacchio, who had 22 kills on 78 attacks, and Christine Strawson, who was more effective with 19 kills and a .354 hitting percentage. Michelle Leahy gave her team 52 assists and 18 digs.
Lafayette (9-8 overall) was led by Veronica Canto-Ponce, who recorded 16 kills, 11 digs and six blocks. Senior Heidi Olichwier had eight kills and 20 assists, while Katie Moore posted 18 assists as the Leopards once again went with a combination of players which shifted Olichwier, Lafayette's all-time assists leader, out of the setter position.
Freshmen Michaela Donohue and Karla Barbiche led Lafayette with 22 and 17 digs, respectively. Classmate Maura Kelly contributed five blocks.
Lafayette will have the next week to prepare for two of the top teams in the Patriot League, as the Kirby Sports Center will host defending champion American on Friday, Oct. 15. Saturday night's match will be against a Navy team that opened 2004 with a 10-1 record before dropping three of its first four league contests.
