EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Archie Fisher caught five passes for 99 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the offense outscored the defense, 55-36, in Lafayette's Maroon-White spring football game on Saturday.
Fisher hauled in an eight-yard scoring toss from sophomore Brad Maurer in the back of the end zone, then later scored on a 30-yard throw from Pat Davis on a post-corner route.
The scrimmage utilized a scoring system that allowed the defense to collect points for making stops and creating turnovers, while the offense scored by moving the chains and crossing the goal line.
"I thought the scrimmage went great, especially because we had no severe injuries," said fifth-year head coach Frank Tavani. "We got a lot of work in and were able to put 120-some plays on film to review and learn from. All in all it was a good day."
Senior tailback Joe McCourt played just the first two series, collecting 53 yards on six carries. He rumbled for 34 yards on his first attempt of the day and scored the game's first touchdown, taking an option pitch from Maurer around the right end for a five-yard scoring run.
Sophomore Jonathan Hurt scored the game's other two touchdowns on runs of six and three yards.
Junior defensive back Larry Johnson blocked a field goal and an extra point to pace the defense, while linemen Keith Bloom, Dan Liseno, Marvin Snipes, Chris Brungo and Paul Ziska were able to put consistent pressure on the Leopard quarterbacks.
Maurer, Davis and Cole Sampson all took snaps under center. Maurer was 5-of-9 for 66 yards, Davis was 5-of-11 for 76 yards and Sampson was 5-of-18 for 90 yards.
