STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette won the first game 30-11 on its way to a 3-0 sweep of Wagner College on Thursday night. The Leopards improve to 7-3 with the win, surpassing last year's victory total just over two weeks into the season.
Sophomore Veronica Canto-Ponce paced the squad with 11 kills, seven blocks and four aces, while Shannon Fisher chipped in with eight kills and four blocks. Meagan Martino also had four blocks as the Leopards' 10.0 team blocks were a season high and contributed to the Seahawks' .000 hitting percentage (28 kills and 28 errors).
Lafayette won the final two games, 30-25, and closed the third game with a decisive 8-3 run.
Senior setter Heidi Olichwier had 22 assists to push her career total to 2,493. Freshman Michaela Donohue led Lafayette with 10 digs.
Trish Morris and Kerry Krohn led Wagner with seven kills apiece.
Lafayette will open the Leopard tri-match on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. against Hofstra. The Pride of Hofstra will play Coppin State at 3 p.m., and the day's action will close as Lafayette takes on Coppin State at 6 p.m.
