Nathan Jolly netted a goal 6:33 into overtime to give Lafayette a 2-1 win over Rhode Island in the opening round of the Bronc Fall Classic on Saturday at Rider University.
The Leopards (1-1) led for the majority of the game, taking a 1-0 advantage at the 36:41 mark. Thomas Harju's pass led to a breakaway goal for freshman Mark Price, the first scoring tally of his collegiate career.
Lafayette held its lead through halftime and late into the game before Rhode Island (0-1) broke through for a goal with 3:02 left in regulation. Dawid Badecki took a pass from Jeffrey Gonsalves and scored from five yards out to knot the score at 1-1.
At 96:33, Jolly, a senior co-captain, put an end to the suspense, collecting a golden goal on a direct kick from 30 yards out to give Lafayette its first victory of the young season.
Mike Tortora made two saves and allowed one goal in 96 minutes in net for Lafayette, while his URI counterpart Dean Ruddy made three saves and surrendered a pair of goals in the loss.
In the other game on the day, Raphael Jones scored twice for Appalachian State (1-1) which claimed a 2-1 victory over host Rider.
The Leopards will return to action on Sunday at noon and will face Appalachian State. The match-up, which was determined prior to the start of the tournament, will essentially be the championship game of the four-game event. Rider will play Rhode Island on Sunday at 2:30 pm.
