PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette volleyball team improved its record to 3-2 on day two of the La Salle Invitational. The Leopards won their first match, 3-0, over Coppin State before falling to tournament host La Salle, 3-0, in the evening session. Lafayette is 3-2 for the first time in 12 seasons. In the day's opening match, played at 4:30, Lafayette dominated the Coppin State Eagles by the score of 30-14, 30-16, 30-21. Sophomore right side hitter Veronica Canto-Ponce, an All-Tournament Team member, put down 18 kills in 25 total attacks for an impressive .520 hitting percentage. The Leopards came out firing on all cylinders in the opening game, recording a .600 attack percentage with 14 kills against just two errors on 20 attempts. Lafayette had a season-high .351 hitting percentage for the match. Senior Heidi Olichwier posted 14 assists before yielding the setter's position to sophomore Katie Moore, who recorded a career-high 17 assists. Junior outside hitter Catherine Herchenroder rifled six of Lafayette's 16 service aces in the victory. In the day's second match, which started at 7:00 p.m., La Salle posted the win by the score of 30-25, 30-23, 32-30. After dropping the first two games, the Leopards made a late push in game three, but Lafayette, playing its second match in less than two hours, was unable to push the match to a fourth game. Sophomore middle blocker Shannon Fisher finished with 10 kills and was also selected to the All-Tournament Team. Freshman outside hitter Michaela Donohue led the Leopards with 13 digs, while Olichwier handed out 26 assists. La Salle's Amanda Woods recorded 45 assists and Carolyn Judge posted 24 digs for the host Explorers. Lafayette will travel to Kutztown for a match on Wednesday, Sept. 8. The Leopards will then host the Lafayette Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10 and 11. Farleigh Dickinson, Howard and Sacred Heart will make the trip to Easton, with the host team's first match starting at 7 p.m. on Friday.
