WORCHESTER, Mass. (www.lafayette.edu) - With a 3-0 win over Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon, the Lafayette volleyball team completed the season sweep over the Crusaders. The Leopards return to Easton with the team's second shutout of Holy Cross this season, winning 30-23, 30-25, 30-23.
Lafayette won with precision hitting (.263) and minimizing key errors, while holding the Holy Cross offense to .134 on the afternoon. Lafayette drilled 51 kills and limited Holy Cross to 46.
Lafayette opened the action hitting a match-high .316 with 16 total kills. Junior Veronica Canto-Ponce and senior Catherine Herchenroder provided a spark for the Leopard offense, while the team held the Crusaders to .146 in game one en route to the 30-23 win.
The ensuing pair of games seemed to follow a similar script, as the Leopards did not let up offensively and held the defense in check to cruise to victory. Defensively, Canto-Ponce (15), sophomore Michaela Donohue (16) and freshmen Megan Carter (18) and Kathleen Kretzmer (16) all past the double-figure plateau in digs. Carter played a solid all-around match, as the starting setter put up 41 assists and totaled just one ball handling error.
Canto-Ponce and Herchenroder led the way for the Leopards with 13 kills apiece, while hitting .229 and .444, respectively. Donohue and junior Shannon Fisher chipped in with seven kills each. Fisher was also in on two of the Leopards' five blocks.
The Leopards improved to 13-11 overall and 3-6 in Patriot League action, while Holy Cross dropped to 6-15 and 2-7 in league play.
Lafayette returns to action on Friday, Oct. 28 as the Leopards host defending Patriot League Champion American at Kirby Sports Center beginning at 7 p.m.
