EASTON, Pa. - - Lafayette won its third straight game, and in the process laid claim to the tournament title at the Fifth Annual Lafayette Puma Soccer Classic. The Leopards (3-1) used goals from three different players to run away to a 3-0 win over La Salle on Sunday.
Lafayette put the game away early on. Scott Hawkins scored his third goal of the season on assists from Anthony Sepe and Mark Price. Sepe played a long ball to Price who dribbled down the side and crossed a ball into the box for Hawkins. Hawkins knocked it inside the far post for what held up as the game-winning goal.
Senior captain Buster Wiand netted his second goal of the weekend at 23:57. He collected a loose ball in the top of the box and deposited it in the upper right hand corner of the goal to give Lafayette a 2-0 lead by halftime.
Head coach Dennis Bohn's Leopards continued their dominant play in the second half. Sophomore Mark Price took in a back pass from junior Thomas Harju, controlled it and fired off a successful shot in the upper 90 to run the final to 3-0.
The Lafayette defense and senior captain Mike Tortora put together their second shutout in as many games. Tortora made one save in 90 minutes. La Salle goalie Andrew Bernhard made two saves while allowing three Lafayette goals.
In the first game of the final round, Stony Brook (2-1-1) ran away for a 5-2 win over Philadelphia Univ. (1-3). Chris Megaloudis was all of the offense Stony Brook needed. He scored four goals and finished with five for the tournament as Stony Brook posted a 2-0 record. The Leopards, however, secure the tournament title via the goal differential criterion in which Lafayette featured a +6 and Stony Brook a +4. La Salle (1-3) finished in third place followed by Philadelphia in fourth.
Tortora, Hawkins, Wiand and sophomore defender Luke Sullivan were named to the Lafayette Puma Soccer Classic All-Tournament Team from the Leopards. Megaloudis joined Douglas Narvaez and Rob Fucci for Stony Brook. Also selected were Alfred Chambers and Gianni Cimini from Philadelphia (1-3) and Jeremy Ortiz and Brian Barry from La Salle.
Lafayette (3-1) returns to action on Friday, traveling to face Stony Brook in Seawolves Fall Classic. Kick off is slated for 8 p.m.
