ORLANDO, Fla. - The Lafayette men's soccer team broke the seal on the 2005 season on Friday night at the University of Central Florida Kickoff Classic. The host Golden Knights scored in the 21st minute and held on for a 1-0 win in both teams' season opener.
Central Florida (1-0) controlled the match early, earning three successive corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of play. UCF's Mike Mattson had a chance to put the hosts ahead on the third opportunity but Lafayette goalkeeper Mike Tortora made a save to keep the game scoreless.
Adam Rashwan scored at 21:02 for Central Florida which entered the season with a string of three straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Billy Judino crossed the ball to Rashwan who was able to boot a shot behind Tortora for the game-winner.
The Leopards seized the momentum in the final 15 minutes of the first half, but UCF goalkeeper Ryan McIntosh recorded three saves to keep the Leopards (0-1) off the board.
The Leopards were outshot on the night, 9-4, but all four of their shots came on goal. Ori Kalmus (2), Scott Hawkins and Mike Tilley fired off shots for the visitors.
Tortora made three saves and allowed one goal in 90 minutes while McIntosh, made four saves and did not allow a goal.
Lafayette will look to even its record on Sunday in the second round of the UCF Kickoff Classic. The Leopards will face Stetson at 2:15 p.m. Stetson dropped a 2-1 decision to Central Connecticut in the opening round. The second round pairings were established before the start of the tournament.
