PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's volleyball team bounced back from yesterday's season-opening loss with a pair of wins during the closing day of the La Salle Tournament on Saturday. The Leopards shut out Providence, 3-0, and followed up with a 3-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson at Tom Gola Arena.
Sophomore Michaela Donohue earned All-Tournament team accolades after totaling a team-high 25 kills on the day.
During the morning action, the Leopards' offense clicked on all cylinders as they took Providence in three, 30-15, 30-25, 30-17. Sophomore Michaela Donohue enjoyed a 14-kill debut, while also recording a team-high 16 digs and four block assists. Junior Veronica Canto-Ponce and senior Catherine Herchenroder chipped in with nine and eight kills, respectively.
Rookies Audrey O'Donnell and Megan Carter saw significant time, as O'Donnell tallied six kills and Carter started her second game in the setter spot.
The Leopards hit .285 on 49 kills as a team, while also coming away with 16 blocks.
In the nightcap, Lafayette dropped the third game, 30-26, before sealing the match victory with a 30-18 decision. The Leopards took the first two games 30-24, 30-19.
A trio of Leopards hit the double-figure mark for match kills, led by Canto-Ponce with 14. Donohue recorded 11, and Herchenroder tallied 11 kills and a team-best .333 hitting percentage. Junior Shannon Fisher chipped in with nine kills.
The Leopards tallied 52 kills overall, including a match-best .467 hitting percentage in the fourth game to seal the win.
The Leopards now stand at 2-1 on the young season.
Lafayette returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 7 at St. Francis (N.Y.) before returning home to host the Lafayette College Invitational on Sept. 9-10 at Kirby Sports Center.
