MADISON, N.J. (www.lafayette.edu) - Participating in its second meet of the season and first of the New Year, the Lafayette fencing team traveled to Drew University on Sunday. The Leopards squared off with Cornell, Army, Haverford and host Drew. Rookie Luigi Camilleri secured a team-best nine wins on the afternoon, but it was not enough for the Leopards to overcome some stiff competition.
Employing the sabre, Camilleri went 3-0 against both Cornell and Army. His only setbacks of the day came in a pair of losses to Drew and a single versus Haverford. His swordsmanship led a sabre group including senior Nate Landis and junior Annalese Maddox that came away with two overall triumphs by way of a 7-2 win over Cornell and a 5-4 win over Army. Landis went 6-6, drawing the second most wins for Lafayette.
Winning five of his bouts, Brendon O'Dea (foil) had the most success against host Drew. The junior posted two of the Leopards' four wins against the Rangers. Senior Andrew Kopelman (epee) and Robert Boguski (epee) won five and four bouts, respectively.
The Lafayette fencers will get a chance for revenge against four of the weekend's opponents when the team is back in action on Feb. 12 at 10 a.m. The Leopards will see Haverford, Drew, Cornell and Army again, while they also battle with New Jersey Institute of Technology for the first time this season.
